Description:

The Kingdom of Kush emerged around 1000 BCE in Nubia, south of Egypt, and became one of Africa’s most powerful ancient civilizations. With its capital first at Napata and later at Meroë, Kush developed its own writing system, built pyramid-style tombs, and became a major center for ironworking and trade. Around 750 BCE, Kushite kings conquered Egypt and ruled as the 25th Dynasty, reviving Egyptian traditions and architecture. After being pushed out of Egypt by the Assyrians, the Kushites moved their capital to Meroë, where they entered a golden age marked by strong leadership, rich culture, and booming trade in gold, ivory, and iron. Meroë thrived for centuries, but by the 300s CE, shifting trade routes and the rise of the Kingdom of Aksum in the east weakened Kush. Around 350 CE, Aksumite forces invaded and destroyed Meroë, bringing the Kingdom of Kush to an end after more than 1,000 years of influence in Africa and beyond.
