Korean War (jun 25, 1950 – jul 27, 1953)
Description:
On June 25, 1950, the communist state of North Korea invaded its democratic neighbor, South Korea, causing war to break out. The UN immediately reacted by calling on its members for aid. Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent sent 25 000 of Canadian troops and 3 naval destroyers to Korea, trying to drive North Korea back over the border. Simultaneously, Lester Pearson, Canada's Minister of External Affairs, was sent to peacefully negotiate a ceasefire. A ceasefire was agreed on July 27, 1953, after several years of brutal fighting, greatly due to Pearson’s efforts. As of today, the ceasefire is still in effect, and which sustains tension between the two Korean governments.
