Reign of Xerxes I (dec 11, 486 BC – jul 21, 465 BC)

Description:

Xerxes is the technically the fifth, but is commonly named the fourth 'King of Kings.' He mounts the main attempt to subjugate the Greek cities; legend tells of an army of millions, while modern estimation place the number closer to anything between 300,000 to 500,000. Still a remarkable force, larger than anything ever assembled before. Famously ordered the 'lashing of the Hellespont' after his failure to bridge it the first time. Assassinated by Artabanus the head of the Royal Guard in 463.
