Gwangju Uprising (may 18, 1980 – may 27, 1980)
Description:
The Gwangju Uprising was the South Korean public's response Chun Doo-hwan becoming a military dictator by pulling off a coup d'état and executing a martial law in order to arrest opposition leaders, shutting down all universities, banning political activities and suppressing the press.
The uprising was a student organized riot that resulted in the death of 600-2300 people from conflict with the military.
The uprising was supressed violently by the military but it was successful in the sense that the uprising was a huge inspiration for the South Korean public's movement to achieve a completely developed democracy in the 80s.
