The Great Leap Forward (jan 1, 1958 – jan 1, 1962)
Description:
The Great Leap Forward was a campaign created by the Chinese government under the rule of Mao Zedong to industrialise China. It started in February 1958 and ended in 1962. People would be placed into Communes where farmers were to be placed into groups and share resources due to China being a communist nation. It also involved a lot of farming. Farmers were told to produce unrealistic amounts of crops, no matter what. This caused farmers to lie about crop production, tricking people to think that there was a lot of food. As food was exported to the richer cities of China, the rural areas were beginning to run out of food, causing the Great Chinese Famine, killing an estimate of 15 to 55 million. It ended in 1962 and was an embarrassment for Mao and his people.
