Description:
- the resulting war was only 7 weeks long, but brutal. the two sides were closely matched, Austria had 200,000 soldiers, compared to 120,000 from France and Piedmont’s own force of 70,000 soldiers
- Austria had the early initiative. They crossed the Ticino River, threatening a direct invasion of Piedmont. French troops had been rushed to the front by railway, and many were lacking their equipment or provisions
- Gusiepi Garibaldi volunteer force the Hunters of the Alps also participated in a campaign of guerilla warfare against the Austrians
