Ukrainian War of Independence (may 14, 1916 – apr 8, 1917)

Description:

The Ukrainian War could not have been a messier affair, with four different factions fighting for control of the region.

It began as Ukrainian nationalists and reform minded socialist took note of the weakened Russian state and sent demands for what amounted to dominion status to Moscow. Moscow refused, believing that the Ukrainians would not risk rising up now when the state lay threatened by German supremacy and even if they did, would be easily quelled.

This began the first stage of the war, as many Ukrainian soldiers deserted and joined with the bands of peasants which began to fight under the banner of the Ukrainian Republic. Initially, many victories were won by the Republicans as Russian troops had already taken heavy losses from the Carpathian Counter Offensive, and so had little morale left to fight in the Ukraine.

The second stage began as the Republic itself began to split into factions. Most stayed with the centrist Mykhailo Hrushevsky and his reformist socialist faction but some insisted that the revolution need go farther and pushed for the People's Republic of the Ukraine, a far more radical Marxist-Nationalist faction led by Hryhoriy Hrynko. Fighting soon broke out between the two groups but popular opinion stayed with the center faction which had already shown itself to be capable of winning independence and so after some fighting in mid 1916, the Ukrainian Republic ultimately won.

During this time though, many ethnic Russians began to voice their support for remaining with Russia, particularly clustered around the Taurida Governorate ( Crimea). On January of 1917, they proclaimed the Taurida Republic, an ethnically Russian government whose Declaration of Autonomy was partially lifted straight from the Zemstvo Petition. The Ukrainians proved unable to dislodge the Russians, and even with the conclusion of the Peace of Easter, Russian troops and citizens militias remained in Crimea. The Crimean government remained independent until invaded by retreating Soviets in 1922, who then signed a treaty with the Ukrainians stating that the Soviets would not invade the Ukraine in exchange for a similar promise from the Ukrainians.
