The Carpathian Counter Offensive (apr 1, 1916 – aug 15, 1916)

Description:

Bolstered by German successes in the Baltic, Austrian forces, as well as the German 8th, begin to counter attack to reverse the gains of the Danubian Campaign. Though a short offensive it was the final deathblow to a dying Russian war effort.

The first hit came as Bulgarian troops finally pushed beyond the Danube and began advancing into Romania, forcing Romanian troops to pull back in defense of the heartland. Thus allowing for Austria troops to pour back into Transylvania.

The second hit was the beginning of a mass revolt in the Ukraine which drew Russian troops off the border, allowing for the German 8th Army to thrust the Russians all the way back to
Lviv.
