The Liberator Newspaper (1831-1865) (jan 1, 1831 – dec 29, 1865)

Description:

One of the most radical media sources of its time, The Liberator was an abolitionist newspaper that called for the immediate abolishment of slavery and the emancipation of enslaved people. Founded and edited by William Lloyd Garrison, The Liberator was a platform for civil rights, racial equality, and anti-slavery discussion all in a time where that was not the general consensus of American opinion. Garrison criticized the church and the Constitution for being tools of the oppressors and condemned people's complacency to the racial injustice of the time. Garrison and The Liberator advocated for peaceful moral suasion in contrast to other more extremist abolitionists like John Brown. Garrison released weekly editions for 35 years, with the newspaper coming to an end when the 13th Amendment was ratified, as the goal for which it was founded was ultimately met (U.S. Department of the Interior, n.d.).
