American Anti-Slavery Society (1833-1870) (dec 1, 1833 – dec 1, 1870)

Description:

The biggest, most prominent, and influential abolitionist organization of the time was the American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS). Founded by William Lloyd Garrison, Arthur and Lewis Tappan, Theodore Dwight Weld, and Theodore S. Wright and including prominent abolitionist leaders such as Fredrick Douglass and William Wells Brown, the organization advocated for the immediate abolishment of the institution of slavery, condemning it for being a moral sin, and the emancipation of enslaved people. Eventually the organization split, due to differences in beliefs, with Garrison considered radical left-wing for condemning the Constitution as he believed it inherently supported slavery and also believed in allowing women leadership roles. This would lead to other organizations being formed such as the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society and Liberty Party and the eventual dissolution of the organization (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2024).
