The Freedmen's Bureau (1865–1872) (mar 3, 1865 – jan 1, 1872)

Description:

The Freedmen's Bureau (The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands) was federal agency established by U.S. Congress and President Abraham Lincoln which provided relief and services such as food, clothing, shelter, hospitals and healthcare, refugee camps, legal services, labor contracts, transportation, marriages, schools, and reunification of family to formerly enslaved people. Unfortunately the agency was underfunded and understaffed, leading to limited resources and eventual decline and abolishment of the agency. The agency faced much hostility from local and federal government including the president, White plantation owners, and white supremacist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan (U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).
