Elizabeth Key Grinstead (jan 1, 1630 – jan 20, 1665)
Description:
Elizabeth Key Grinstead was born in 1630 in Warwick County, Virginia, as the daughter of an enslaved African woman and a white English planter. Elizabeth was baptized in the Church of England and placed in indentured servitude as she was an illegitimate child. Her indenture was officially handed over to Justice of the Peace John Mottram. After Mottram's death, she successfully sued for freedom against the County of Virginia. She lived the rest of her life in freedom and died on January 20th, 1665, in Northumberland County, Virginia.
