Description:
The Battle of Iwo Jima, a fierce five-week engagement in the Pacific War, saw the US Marines land on the Japanese-defended island. Despite the Japanese using underground fortifications and tunnel systems to turn the island into a death trap, the Americans eventually gained control. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with more than 21,000 Japanese killed and 5,931 American Marines killed, wounded, or missing in action.
