Description:
Causes:
. People are dissatisfied with the Church of England
. Queen Elizabeth I had no heir
. Magna Carta
. Puritans wanted to purify the Anglican Church
. King Charles I married a Catholic princess
. Charles I did not call parliament
. Increased taxes without the consent of the people
Parliament actions:
. 1641 Parliament passed the Triennial Act, which forced the King to call Parliament once every three years
. Parliament also made their one army called the New Model Army, led by Oliver Cromwell, a militia (informal army) of British men
. The New Model Army beat Charles I's army at the battles of Naseby and Langport (1645)
Charles I's actions:
. Since Charles I did not call his parliament, he could not use the army to respond to the Irish Rebellion (1641)
. Charles I made his own army composing of nobility
. Charles I refused to lose (he would do anything to win)
