Description:
- The Edict of Nantes was issued in 1598 by King Henry IV of France
- King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1686
- Huguenots (protestants), including nobles, can no longer practice their religion
- Not protestant schools
- Loss of Huguenot merchants, bankers, and other skilled professions
- Louis XIV wanted one state = one faith (national unity)
- Louis XIV wanted more control over nobles and sought to strengthen the monarchy
- Economic long term loss since France lost skilled workers
- The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 led to the prosecution of the Huguenots, forcing them to convert, leave, or die
