Yazoo Land Fraud (jan 1, 1794 – jan 1, 1796)

Description:

The Yazoo Land Fraud is a crucial part of Georgia history and changed the state's borders as we know it today. Georgia was once made up of land in present-day Alabama and a little bit of Mississippi. In 1795, under the Yazoo Act, Georgia's legislatures were secretly bribed into selling 35 million acres of western land to different land companies. When people in Georgia found out about this, there was widespread outrage. Georgians believed the land should have been sold to settlers or used to benefit the broader public, instead of handing over land to private companies.

In the next governor's election, voters replaced almost the entire Georgia legislature. The new representatives moved fast to try and undo this now public scandal, arguing that the sales had been made illegal. The federal government did step in to try and resolve this, which led to the Compact of 1802, basically giving back all the land that Georgia had sold back to the US Government.

The Yazoo Land Fraud did leave impacts for American politics and law. It contributed to the Supreme Court case of Fletcher v. Peck (1810) where the Court ruled that a state could not reverse a legal contract, even one made in corruption. This case was huge for protecting property rights and limiting state power under the Constitution. Despite the dramatic burning of documents and the strong public reaction, the scandal showed the challenges facing early American governments as they struggled with tons of different corruption, territorial expansion, and legislative authority.
