Detente (sep 1, 1966 – mar 1, 1980)
Description:
Detente is the name for the period of relaxed tensions and better relations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It began when Nixon became president, and Leonid Brezhnev was the leader of the soviet union. The focus was to ease tensions, and happened through diplomatic efforts. It's considered to have ended in the early 1980s, especially after the soviet invasion of afghanistan. President Reagan's foreign policy also led to tensions heightening again as well.
