Description:

Between 2021 and early 2023, Replika expanded its marketing strategy to prominently feature sexually suggestive content. This shift coincided with the introduction of new premium subscription tiers, which unlocked romantic and erotic role-play (ERP) features, including the exchange of flirtatious dialogue and spicy romantic imagery with AI companions.

Marketing materials frequently leaned into provocative imagery, often depicting female avatars in revealing outfits and framing Replika as an alternative to human girlfriends. Memes and promotional posts circulated across social media, highlighting the app's potential for intimate and romantic interactions.

In-app advertising reinforced this messaging, with pop-up prompts encouraging free users to upgrade when attempting to engage in more explicit conversations. While this strategy attracted new users interested in ERP experiences, it also drew criticism for commodifying emotional and romantic bonds, leading to increasing debate within the Replika community about the app's evolving identity.

In January 2023, the app reached 10 million users.
