It was part of the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation, where Soviet forces launched a major attack on the city, ultimately leading to its capture and the downfall of Nazi Germany. The Red Army, spearheaded by two fronts, attacked Berlin from the east and south, encircling the city after successful battles at Seelow Heights and Halbe.
