Description:
- Italy invaded Abyssinia => appealed
º revenge
º Fertile land and mineral wealth
- They League played for time => Br and Fr desperate for good relations with italy
º neither side responsible; give some of abyssinia to mussolini but he rejected
- League members couldn't agree effective sanctions against Italy.
º Banned arms sales, loans and export of materials to make weapons
º Delayed desition of banning oil exportis => feared americans wouldn't support, and damaged economic interests
º The Suez Canal (owned by Br and Fr) wasn't closed => Main supply route, closing it would have ended, but afraid closing it result in war
- Britain and France tried to do a secret deal to give most of abyssinia to italy
- 1936 Abyssinia fully anexed to Italy
- League was seen as powerless and irrelevant
