Iran-Contra Affair (aug 20, 1985 – mar 4, 1987)
Description:
Despite sale of arms to Iran being restricted following the Iran Revolution, the US begins secretly selling weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of seven Americans being held hostage by Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The money illegally earned by the US with the trade deal is used to fund the Contra rebels in Nicaragua despite Congress's prohibiting of funding the insurgency.
Hezbollah kills two of the hostages before releasing the rest of over a few years.
