Iranian Revolution (jan 7, 1978 – feb 11, 1979)
Description:
Following the building tensions regarding Mohammad Reza Shah's US influence and the regimes efforts to limit political discourse, a revolution begins. The shah is overthrown and government control is assumed by a fiercely anti-Western regime headed by a previously exiled Shiite cleric, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Iran then shifts from a modernizing industrial complex to a Islamic theocracy.
Khomeini states that he will "export" Iran's revolution to its neighboring countries, intending to create more Islamic states.
