Samuel Ernest Vandiver (jan 13, 1959 – jan 15, 1963)
Description:
Samuel Ernest Vandiver served as the Governor of Georgia from 1959 to 1963. He was a segregationist who opposed federal desegregation efforts and played a key role in the state's resistance to the civil rights movement. His tenure was marked by the 1961 desegregation of the University of Georgia, following a court order, and his support of the "states’ rights" position on segregation. Vandiver also oversaw improvements in the state’s infrastructure and educational system, despite the tension surrounding racial issues.
