Samuel Marvin Griffin (jan 11, 1955 – jan 13, 1959)
Description:
Samuel Marvin Griffin served as Governor of Georgia from 1955 to 1959, during a time of intense resistance to the civil rights movement. Griffin opposed the desegregation of public schools following the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision and supported the "massive resistance" strategy. During his administration, Griffin also focused on infrastructure, expanding the state highway system and promoting industrial development. His tenure is often remembered for its defense of segregation and his efforts to preserve Jim Crow policies in Georgia.
