Eugene Talmadge (jan 14, 1941 – jan 12, 1943)

Description:

During his third term as governor of Georgia from 1941 to 1943, Eugene Talmadge continued his opposition to federal intervention and pushed a staunchly segregationist agenda. He became involved in a major controversy known as the “Cocking Affair,” where he forced the dismissal of educators who supported racial integration, leading to the loss of accreditation for white colleges in the state. His interference in the university system drew national criticism and divided the state politically. The backlash from this controversy played a major role in his defeat in the 1942 Democratic primary.
