Henry Dickerson McDaniel served as Governor of Georgia from 1883 to 1886, during which he focused on rebuilding the state's economy and infrastructure following the Civil War and Reconstruction. He is credited with establishing the Georgia School of Technology (now Georgia Tech) and promoting fiscal responsibility by reducing state debt. However, his administration faced criticism for supporting the convict lease system, which allowed private companies to exploit prison labor, disproportionately affecting African Americans.
