James Boynton served briefly as the Governor of Georgia in 1883, stepping in as governor after Alexander H. Stephens died in office. His term lasted only a few months, from March to May, because he was completing the remainder of Stephens’ term and was not elected to continue. During his short tenure, Boynton primarily acted as a caretaker and made no major policy changes, but he did face criticism for perceived political opportunism and for aligning with conservative Bourbon Democrats.
