James Boynton (mar 4, 1883 – may 10, 1883)
Description:
James Boynton served briefly as the Governor of Georgia in 1883, stepping in as governor after Alexander H. Stephens died in office. His term lasted only a few months, from March to May, because he was completing the remainder of Stephens’ term and was not elected to continue. During his short tenure, Boynton primarily acted as a caretaker and made no major policy changes, but he did face criticism for perceived political opportunism and for aligning with conservative Bourbon Democrats. He ran in the special election to keep the governorship but was defeated, marking the end of his brief and relatively uneventful term.
