Alexander Hamilton Stephens (nov 4, 1882 – mar 4, 1883)
Description:
Alexander Hamilton Stephens, former Vice President of the Confederacy, served briefly as Governor of Georgia from November 1882 until March 1883. His term was short because he died just four months after taking office, cutting short any significant gubernatorial agenda. As governor, he focused on promoting education and reconciliation in the post-Reconstruction South, though his health limited his effectiveness. His legacy remained controversial due to his staunch defense of slavery and his infamous "Cornerstone Speech," which continued to shadow his political reputation during and after his governorship.
