Alfred Holt Colquitt (jan 12, 1877 – nov 4, 1882)
Description:
Alfred Holt Colquitt served as Governor of Georgia from 1877 to 1882, during which he promoted economic development and supported the expansion of the railroad system in the post-Reconstruction South. A former Confederate general, Colquitt was part of the “Redeemer” movement that aimed to restore Democratic control and limit African American political power. His tenure was marked by controversy, particularly surrounding allegations of corruption in the state’s lease of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, though he was never formally charged. Despite the scandal, he maintained strong political support and later served as a U.S. Senator.
