Charles Jones Jenkins (dec 14, 1865 – jan 13, 1868)
Description:
Charles Jones Jenkins served as the governor of Georgia from 1865 to 1868 during the challenging Reconstruction period. As governor, he opposed the Reconstruction policies imposed by the federal government, particularly the ratification of the 14th and 15th Amendments. Jenkins worked to restore white supremacy in the state and initially resisted the changes required by Congress, including granting civil rights to formerly enslaved people. His tenure ended when he resigned in 1868, following political pressure and the challenges of dealing with Reconstruction efforts in the South.
