George Rockingham Gilmer (nov 8, 1837 – nov 6, 1839)
Description:
During his second term as governor of Georgia (1837–1839), George Rockingham Gilmer focused on strengthening the state’s infrastructure and public institutions. He supported the expansion of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which aimed to boost Georgia’s economy by improving transportation. Gilmer also dealt with the ongoing issues surrounding the forced removal of Native Americans from his previous time as governor, continuing the policies that led to the Trail of Tears. His administration reflected the broader push for economic growth and territorial consolidation in antebellum Georgia.
