George Rockingham Gilmer (nov 4, 1829 – nov 9, 1831)
Description:
George Rockingham Gilmer served his first term as Governor of Georgia from 1829 to 1831. During this time, he strongly supported the expansion of white settlement onto Native American lands, particularly pushing for the removal of the Cherokee people. He backed the controversial Georgia laws that extended state authority over Cherokee territory, directly challenging federal treaties. Gilmer's actions as governor contributed to the eventual forced removal of the Cherokee during the Trail of Tears.
