William Schley (nov 4, 1835 – nov 8, 1837)

Description:

William Schley served as the Governor of Georgia from 1835 to 1837. During his term, he supported the expansion of public education and advocated for internal improvements, including better transportation infrastructure. He played a key role in organizing Georgia’s first state-owned railroad, which later became part of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Schley also worked to strengthen the state militia and was a firm supporter of states’ rights. In recognition of his contributions, Schley County in southwestern Georgia was named in his honor in 1857.
