Description:
During his first term as Governor of Georgia from 1809 to 1813, David Brydie Mitchell focused on strengthening the state's economy and infrastructure. He established the Highway Board to improve transportation and supported the founding of the Bank of Augusta, Georgia's first chartered bank. Mitchell also enacted legislation to outlaw dueling and oversaw the construction of the state penitentiary in Milledgeville. His term laid the groundwork for future economic development and public institutions in Georgia.
