Description:
During his term as governor from 1796 to 1798, Jared Irwin played a pivotal role in addressing the Yazoo land fraud scandal. He signed the Rescinding Act on February 13, 1796, which nullified the controversial land sales and publicly burned a copy of the Yazoo Act in Louisville, the newly designated capital. Irwin's leadership in this matter helped restore public trust in Georgia's government. His tenure also marked the beginning of Louisville's role as Georgia's capital, a position it held from late 1796 until 1804.Sources:
