Description:
George Mathews served as the Governor of Georgia from January 9, 1787, to January 26, 1788. During his brief tenure, he worked to resolve territorial disputes with neighboring South Carolina and took steps to strengthen the state's militia. Mathews also played a role in the ratification of the U.S. Constitution by attending Georgia's ratifying convention in 1787. His leadership contributed to a period of stability for Georgia in the post-Revolutionary era.
