Edward Telfair served as the governor of Georgia from 1786 to 1787 for his first term, during a pivotal period in the state's early history. He oversaw the state's transition from the Articles of Confederation to the newly formed United States Constitution. Telfair was the first governor to serve during Georgia's move of its capital from Savannah to Augusta, a shift that reflected the growing political and economic importance of the western part of the state.
