George Handley (jan 26, 1788 – jan 7, 1789)
Description:
George Handley served as the 18th Governor of Georgia from January 26, 1788, to January 7, 1789. A former captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, he was instrumental in drafting Georgia's 1789 state constitution, which strengthened executive authority and allowed the governor to convene special legislative sessions. His tenure also coincided with a surge of settlers moving into Georgia's frontier, prompting the state to address land acquisition and relations with Native American tribes. After his term as governor, Handley continued to serve Georgia as a member of the state legislature and in various local government roles until his death in 1793 at age 41.
