Atlanta, Ga (apr 25, 1868 – jan 1, 30000)
Description:
Atlanta became Georgia’s 5th and final capital city in 1868 and has been an important city in the state ever since. It replaced Milledgeville due to its continued growth and better transportation. After the Civil War Georgia was continually developing and Atlanta was a better place to represent the future of the state. One important reason Atlanta was picked as the capital was because it was a major railroad hub. Trains from all over the South connected there, which helped the economy boom. After the war, during Reconstruction, Georgia needed a fresh start, and Atlanta was Georgia's representation of that.
Atlanta has been part of many major events. In the 1950’s during the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta became a center for peaceful protests and many important leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born there. Students also led protests in the 60’s to fight against segregation. In 1996, Atlanta had the Olympics, bringing people from all over the world, growing the city even more. Today, Atlanta is home to multiple big companies such as Coca-Cola and CNN, and is known for being a leader in both business and politics. Overall, Atlanta became the capital because of its location and growth, and has stayed important because of its role in Georgia’s history and future.
