John Martin (jan 3, 1782 – jan 8, 1783)
Description:
John Martin served as Governor of Georgia from January 3, 1782, to January 8, 1783, during the final stages of the American Revolution. His leadership was instrumental in Georgia's recovery from British occupation; under his governance, the British evacuated Savannah on July 11, 1782, marking the end of the war in the state. Martin implemented policies such as the Confiscation and Banishment Act of 1782, which seized property from over 340 Loyalists, and offered pardons to those who surrendered, encouraging defections from British forces. Additionally, he worked to restore peace with Native American tribes and addressed post-war challenges like food shortages and lawlessness.
