John Adam Treutlen (may 8, 1777 – 10h 39min, jan 3, 1778 y)
Description:
John Adam Treutlen, Georgia’s first elected governor under the 1777 constitution, was a self-made man who rose from indentured servitude to become a wealthy planter and influential political leader. He aligned with radical democratic elements, particularly the "Liberty" faction, which opposed the elite conservative factions that had traditionally held power in Georgia. His support for land redistribution and greater political participation for common settlers put him at odds with entrenched elites, fueling bitter political rivalries. These tensions culminated to his assassination in 1782 reflecting the deep divisions and instability of Revolutionary-era Georgia. Treutlen’s life and death highlight the volatile intersection of class, politics, and revolution in the early American South.
