Daniel 11:6 (jan 1, 283 BC – dec 31, 246 BC)

Description:

Dan 11:6  And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.

King of the South:
Ptolemy II Philadelphus (ruled Egypt 283–246 BCE)

King of the North:
Antiochus II Theos (ruled the Seleucid Empire 261–246 BCE)

The Daughter:
Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy II

What Happened:
To end a war between the Seleucids and Ptolemies (the Second Syrian War), Ptolemy II gave his daughter Berenice in marriage to Antiochus II.

But there was a twist: Antiochus was already married to Laodice, whom he had to divorce in order to marry Berenice.

The idea was that this would seal peace between the two kingdoms.

Then It All Fell Apart:
After Ptolemy II died in 246 BCE, Antiochus II went back to Laodice.

Laodice, not exactly thrilled with how she had been treated, had Antiochus poisoned.

Then she murdered Berenice and her child, securing the throne for her own son, Seleucus II Callinicus.

This is exactly what Daniel 11:6 was describing:

The "agreement" was the marriage alliance.

The daughter "shall not retain the power of her arm"—Berenice had no lasting power.

"He and his offspring shall not endure"—both Antiochus and Berenice’s son were killed.
