Causes:
Mao wanted to end China's dependence on the Soviet Union in developing China's industry (walking on two legs)
Mao wanted to continue the economic progress from the First Five Year Plan
Mao believed that anything could be achieved if the will to succeed existed
Mao believed that socialism was superior to capitalism, shown by Soviet achievements (e.g. first satellite in space in 1957)
The collectivisation of agriculture would provide sufficient food to feed the expanding workforce and surplus could be sold abroad to buy machinery
