Causes:To defeat the warlords - Both the CCP and GMD wanted to unite China under a single government, so they decided to form the United Front to defeat the warlords.
Influence of the Soviet Union - The Soviet Union provided aid to both the CCP and GMD and encouraged them to cooperate. This would allow them to build a stronger military force and form a united, communist China
30th May incident - Confirmed that force was required to remove foreigners from China
