Causes:
Weakness of the Central government - Both Sun Yat-sen and Yuan Shikai failed to create a strong, stable republican government, and after Yuan's death, there was no clear central authority to rule China.
Rise of Regional Military power - During the early 1900s, provincial military leaders gained a lot of power and resources, so were able to take control of different areas of China.
