The First Opium War (sep 4, 1839 – aug 29, 1842)
Description:
The First Opium War was fought between Britain and China, after China tried to stop British opium trade. Britain’s ginormous and strong navy won, forcing China to sign the Treaty of Nanjing (1842). The treaty:- Opened five ports to British trade.
- Gave Hong Kong to Britain.
- Gave special rights to British citizens.
This weakened China’s Qing Dynasty and increased foreign control over China.
