Autonomy - The Chanak Crisis(1922) (sep 15, 1922 – oct 22, 1922)

Description:

William Lyon Mackenzie King now upholds power and promises to give his citizens independence. In October of 1922, Turkey and Greece fought over territory Greece had received in the peace settlement, and as the war started, British troops were settled at the port of the Turkish city, Chanak. Turkish did not want them there anymore and were pushing to get the British to leave. Britain tried to get Canadian soldiers sent to provide help but Mackenzie King held back on sending anybody and stated Parliament had to make the decision. By the end of the situation, Canadian troops were not sent in nor necessary for the predicament. This shows the first of many times Canada started to distinguise from Britain.
