Battle of Verdun (feb 21, 1916 – dec 18, 1916)

Description:

The Battle of Verdun was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of World War I. Fought on the Western Front in France, the German forces were up against the French army in a brutal struggle for control of the strategically important fortress city of Verdun on the River Meuse. The German Chief of General Staff, Erich von Falkenhayn, planned to "bleed France white" by forcing them to commit massive resources to defend Verdun. Despite initial German gains, the French successfully defended Verdun. Ended with an estimated 1 million casualties.
