Description:
The first effective use of lethal chemical weapons by Germany took place at Ypres, Belgium. At 5 p.m., German forces released chlorine gas from cylinders embedded in the ground, creating a poisonous cloud that drifted over Allied trenches. This attack was the first appearance of chlorine gas as a weapon and caused panic among unprepared Allied troops, forcing them to abandon their positions.
