Fort Donelson (feb 11, 1862 – feb 16, 1862)

Description:

This is one of the first major union victories of the war. The battle took place in Tennessee around Fort Donelson which was located along the Cumberland river. The union soldiers attacked with gun boats and initially repelled but while the confederates were planning to counter attack the general Ulysses S. Grant attacked and caught them off guard. He only accepted an unconditional surrender and ultimately took the fort for the union.
